More grunt in less space

With a large boom and arm for greater reach, the Case CX55Bx delivers 5,100kgf (50kN) of bucket digging force and also has increased auxiliary flow for hydraulic attachments. Its 39.3-hp (29.3-kW) engine, operating weight of 5,577 kg and dig depth of 3.9 metres give the CX55Bx enough size and power for tackling a variety of utility, commercial and residential construction applications. Plus, its compact size and cab height of 2.55 metres make the Case CX55Bx excavator as easy to transport as a skid steer loader.

In addition to a variety of available attachments—including buckets, hammers and augers—the CX55Bx includes a standard dozer blade for finish grading. The blade features a 38-degree approach angle, and its shape rolls the dirt as it pushes, leaving a smooth and level surface. Case offers both rubber and steel tracks for the CX55B to match the ground conditions.

The CX55Bx shares a characteristic design feature with other Case B Series compact excavator models: a centre-swing boom that enables the operator to dig around stationary objects or alongside obstacles. Minimum tail swing allows the machine to rotate 360 degrees with only 299 mm of the upper structure extending beyond the tracks.

The 75-litre fuel tank on the CX55Bx is 40 per cent larger than other Case compact excavators, boosting operation time.

The CX55Bx compact excavator is designed for fast and easy daily maintenance. The convenient service features include ground-level access to daily maintenance checkpoints. An easy-access electrical compartment is under the seat and an hour meter can be checked from the ground outside the cab.

Case designed the CX55Bx with the operator in mind. The full-size cab design is 10 per cent larger and 178 mm wider than other Case B Series compact excavator cabs.
Large front and rear windows improve operator visibility. A new slide-up front window improves air flow and helps the operator communicate more effectively with co-workers near the machine.

Case team enjoys sneak preview of new products

Recently there was a great deal of excitement at a secret quarry location on the NSW Central Coast.

The entire Case brand management team was there along with the Case dealer team and a very select few media representatives, admiring and test driving a range of new products, including the much anticipated new Skid Steers.

Plenty of mud, some Winter sunshine and awsome new equipment to put through its paces...A fun few days was had by all.

PatAsh & Civil, a success story

Jason Paterson says the key to a successful business is to be forever on the lookout for the next opportunity. He practises what he preaches, and has seen his business, PatAsh & Civil, grow from a one-man operation just six years ago to employing about 30 people today.

Jason started out as a fitter/diesel mechanic working as a subcontractor on civil construction and roads projects. After watching other entrepreneurs get their own businesses up and running, he started to ask “why not me” and in 2005 he established PatAsh & Civil, initially doing patching jobs around Melbourne’s western suburbs.

Pretty soon, he was doing driveways and car parks and before he knew it, he was running a thriving business.

“One minute you’re walking, then you’re running, then you stop and look around and realise, this is actually becoming a big thing,” he said.

He currently has about 30 staff, including more than 20 who are permanently employed. Working on bushfire clean-up projects last year, his staff swelled to more than 100 people.

Jason attributes his business growth to his willingness to take risks.

“I’m the sort of bloke that never says no. Nothing’s too hard, there’s always a way around things. If we need more people, we get them, if we need more equipment, we buy it, if the work is in another state, that’s where we go. Once you’ve got the gear, you’ve got to keep it working,” he said.

Diversification is another essential element of his success, according to Jason. As well as his road services, which include asphalting, civil construction, emergency repairs and kerbing, the business also operates in plant hire, trucks and transport, floats and heavy haulage.

The fleet is up to 74 units, which are maintained primarily by in-house technicians. Jason says choosing equipment is all about relationships. “I look for a good bloke. We’re striking up a very good relationship with Case Construction,” he said.

Jason has recently purchased a Case CX80 eight-tonne excavator and a Case 440 skid steer loader, and is hoping to add a 30-tonne excavator.

“The Case 440 skid steer is incredibly powerful. With a clean-burning, turbocharged, engine delivering 90 Hp and 288 Lbs of torque, you have the muscle and control to get the job done quickly,” said Case Product Manager, Kevin Pritchard. “Most other companies don’t offer the same heavy duty reliability in a mid-size skid steer. These machines are solid steel and built tough.”

Looking after the Case 440 is easy thanks to the design.  Each model features a single-location service point at the back of the machine to make daily checks fast and easy – including the engine oil dipstick, air filter and hydraulic and coolant level sight gauges. Case's exclusive easy-tilt ROPS gives fast, easy access to major components when maintenance or service is required. The remote oil drain helps avoid spills and speeds up oil changes.  A no-maintenance fan belt saves time and money. 

“With all these service and maintenance features, you’ll spend much less time maintaining your Case skid steer loader and more time using it to make you money,” said Kevin.

Visibility is an important element in operator safety and the Case 440 provides exceptional visibility thanks to a reduced tower height and extra perforations in the cab screen, which provide all-around visibility, particularly to the bucket edge. 

“Even though we look after our equipment in-house, you want to know that if there’s a problem the dealership is going to get someone out there. If you’ve got the backing, you’re good to go. The guys at Case Victoria are doing a tremendous job,” said Jason.

Jason says subcontractors thinking about taking the plunge and starting their own company should be prepared to work hard.

“If they’ve got it in them, my advice is to stick with it. People will try to write you off, but you have to keep at it. Live and look outside the square. I wouldn’t be where I am now if I had just stuck to small asphalt jobs. I’ve grown from nothing. Everything I achieve, I pump back into the business.”
